What do I have to do?
Follow these simple steps:
1. Before applying, visit “About Medicare” at https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10043.pdf to find out what you need to prepare.
2. Go to https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/medicare/ , scroll down somewhat, and select “Apply for Medicare Only.” Do not request Social Security Retirement benefits! (Unless, of course, it is your intention to do so before your Normal Retirement Age.)
3. Use the “Related Information” links if you need more information.
4. Apply and complete the application, which normally takes 10 to 30 minutes.
5. Select “Submit Now” to send your application electronically to Social Security.
What happens next? • You’ll see a receipt on the screen that you can print and keep for your records. • You’ll also get an application number you can use to check the status of your application. • The Social Security Administration will review your application and contact you if they need clarification or if they need to see any documents. • They'll process your application and mail you a letter with their decision.
About three weeks after you submit your Part A/Part B enrollment application you will receive your new Medicare card in the mail. You are not finished yet!
You are now ready to design your customized health plan. Your plan design might include one of over 40 choices of benefit-rich Medicare Advantage products offered by major private health insurance companies. Or, you may want to use your Original A&B benefits from Medicare, teamed up with Medicare supplemental coverage plus Medicare prescription drug coverage.
